It is our goal at Red Feather Ranch to nurture and expand the human to horse relationship both on the ground and in the saddle. Our lesson programs cater to individuals who are seeking a better relationship with horses; who are interested in learning not just how to ride, but how to achieve a better partnership with the horse.
ALL of our lessons begin on the ground. Students will learn how to approach, catch, lead, and care for their equine partners on the ground first, before ever setting foot in the saddle. Groundwork and good horsemanship out of the saddle, are essential to providing good riding and horsemanship in the saddle. When students are able to perform the necessary ground care in a safe and consistent manner, they will progress to riding. Riding will mirror their groundwork, as progress is made with understanding and patience.
Lessons might begin in the ring, but students will have the potential to take their learning to the trails and to local shows if they so desire. We offer primarily western lessons, but can offer base English instruction as well.

BEGINNING HORSEMANSHIP LESSONS - learning the groundwork to good horsemanship
Private sessions that focus specifically on the beginning groundwork to good horsemanship without the pressure of getting into the saddle at the end of it. Individuals who have participated in our Beginning Horsemanship Course (see Clinics and Courses under Training) are eligible for discounts. These lessons will primarily focus on taking care of and handling your horse on the ground, as well as basic care of the horse. Lessons are typically one-on-one instruction, but are also open to small groups of up to three individuals per lesson, each paying separately.

RIDING LESSONS - practicing partnership in the saddle
As mentioned above, these lessons will begin with ground work and ground-based horsemanship skills. When students can successfully and safely catch, halter, lead, groom, and tack (assistance available if necessary) then they will move into riding. Riding lessons will begin in the round pen and progress to the arena, track, and potentially the trail or local show ring should students desire. Here at Red Feather Ranch, the partnership between horse and human comes first, as this is what builds good horses and riders.

KIDS 8 AND UNDER - HORSEMANSHIP AND RIDING
For children 4 to 8 years of age, we offer more condensed instruction. Lessons begin on the ground, focusing on good horsemanship with assistance (how to halter and lead safely, how to groom the horse and prepare for riding) and move into riding when the child shows confidence in their assisted groundwork. Riding will take place in the round pen, usually on a lead line, or with a guide at the child's side. Children will learn the basics of posture, balance, and steering. More advanced students may move forward into independent riding and faster gaits.

GROUNDWORK - practicing partnership on the ground
For individuals seeking a more advanced chapter in their horsemanship and ground skills, these lessons provide private instruction on round penning and long-lining techniques, commanding your space on the ground, how to move the horse over obstacles, and how to better communicate intentions and deal with reactions. Discounts available to persons who have participated in our Groundwork Partnership Course.
